Dialectical Behavioral Therapy or DBT, is a type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy that tries to identify and change negative thinking patterns while pushing for positive changes in one’s behaviors. This form of treatment may be used to treat self-destructive behaviors including oxycodone addiction and does so by teaching patients effective skills to cope with and change unhealthy behaviors.

DBT primarily focuses on high risk, tough to treat patients, who may also suffer with multiple diagnoses. Although initially it was designed to help treat those suffering with suicidal behaviors along with borderline personality disorder, it has been adapted for other mental health problems and substance abuse that threatens an individual’s personal safety, relationships, work and emotional well-being.

What is DBT?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Its primary goal is to help teach individuals skills to help cope with stress, regulate emotions and improve relationships with others. DBT was initially derived from a philosophical process known as dialectics, which is based upon the concept that everything is composed of opposites and, within that, change occurs when one opposing force grows strong than the other. Common forms of DBT treatment are included in the following:

  • Individual therapy
  • Group skills training
  • Phone coaching, if needed between therapy sessions

Each individual seeking DBT treatment, may require different variations of therapy. Some may benefit from individual therapy to feel more relaxed, while others may get more from group therapy sessions where they find that the added support is tremendously beneficial. Despite which form of treatment an individual seeks, individuals may need additional support in between their sessions such as phone coaching. This is intended to help recovering addicts overcome any struggles that could immediately jeopardize their mental health, sobriety and physical health. There are three fundamentals of Dialectical Behavior Therapy and these are included in the following:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Validation
  • Dialects

Learning new behaviors can include anything a person feels, thinks or does, and is a critical aspect of DBT. There are four main strategies that are used to help patients change their behaviors: skills training, exposure training, cognitive therapy and contingency management. Skills training involves attending skill groups, completing homework assignments and role playing with others to improve interaction with others. Exposure therapy causes an individual to experience feelings, thoughts or even situations where he once experienced fear and avoided. Cognitive therapy helps an individual recognize and reassess patterns of negative thoughts, replacing them with positive thoughts that more closely reflect reality. Cognitive management allows patients to identify how maladaptive behaviors are rewarded and how adaptive behaviors are punished, then using this knowledge, modify and mold behavior in a more positive way.

Pushing for change does not invalidate the emotional pain patients are feeling, though many often feel this way. Offering those in DBT validation along with the support and encouragement to change enables these individuals to cooperate and decreases their anxiety. During therapy sessions, therapists express understanding of their client’s actions and thought processes without supporting the detrimental decisions.

DBT counselors make three basic assumptions to help patients during treatment:

  • All things are interconnected.
  • Change is both constant and inevitable.
  • Polar opposites can be integrated and brought together to form a closer approximation of one’s personal truth.

The primary goal in DBT is for both the patient and the therapist to work together to resolve the differences between self-acceptance and change in order to bring more positive changes in the individual’s life.

Although DBT treatment has been effective for those struggling with a mental health condition while struggling with addiction, this form of treatment is not for everyone. Many seeking treatment may respond more effectively to other options of treatment.
